<p>Memory foam is a common term used in our lexicon today. Used as material to construct items from mattresses, pillows, toppers and much more, people hail memory foam as a new innovation with numerous implications. However, you might be surprised to know that memory foam is anything but new. Actually, the material has been around for awhile and had a surprising beginning.<br  /><br />

Originally, memory foam was developed by NASA in 1966. As part of an attempt by NASA scientists to make aircraft cushions even safer, the concept of memory foam was born. NASA hoped that it could help reduce the impact of gravitational forces upon its astronauts at lift-off. Its predecessor was dubbed T-foam, short for Temper Foam. It had unique properties that allowed it to act like both a solid and liquid simultaneously. They sought a material that would respond to temperature as well as being able to spread over a large surface area. AS a result, pressure points could thus be reduced. Initially, T-foam was not as durable as memory foam. Over time, it was shown to crack after only a year or two. NASA wanted a material that was more durable and eventually stopped the project. Therefore, the material never did make it to outer space but NASA continued to hold patents for the unique substance.<br  /><br />
<br  /><br />
One of the creators of T-foam, Charles Yost later created his own company, along with NASA support, to make the form available to the public for other uses. T-foam became used in padding for x-ray tables and sports equipment. As time progressed, so did the uses for the foam.<br  /><br />
<br  /><br />
Finally, in the early 80&#8217;s NASA relinquished its domination over memory foam and allowed it to be part of public domain.  More and more companies sprang up utilizing the material for various purposes. It wasn&#8217;t until the early 1990&#8217;s that memory foam became a component of mattresses.  The first <a target="_blank" href="http://www.memoryfoammattressdirect.co.uk">mattresses</a> were attractive to hospitals who wanted to find a way to decrease patient pain. <p>You press your hand into this soft yielding material and you feel it mould itself around the contours of your fingers. You take your hand away, but instead of the material springing back to its original shape, the shape of your hand remains there, moulded into it as if you had pressed your hand into soft sand. It is as though this strange material has memorised the shape of your hand. You continue to watch this ghostly shape, this three dimensional shadow of your hand, but it is changing. Gradually it fades away and the material returns to its original state. Eventually the memory of the shape of your hand has faded away completely. Your hand has been forgotten.<br  /><br />

This strange material is memory foam, and from it are constructed some of the most comfortable <a target="_blank" href="http://www.memoryfoammattressdirect.co.uk/">mattresses</a> available on earth. Its invention dates back to 1966.<br  /><br />
<br  /><br />
Originally called Temper Foam, the material was developed for aircraft seats in order to make them more able to absorb shock and to thus offer greater degrees of both comfort and support in high G situations. Although designed for air bound applications, the material quickly established a niche in a large variety of earthly applications such as medical supports to prevent pressure sores, linings for sports shoes, and crash helmet linings. As the years have gone by, so many more applications for the material have been discovered, leading to the mattresses alluded to above.<br  /><br />
<br  /><br />
The man responsible for this invention was known as Charlie Yost. What he created was polymeric memory foam with open cells. This particular material turned out to have some very special visco-elastic properties; it was soft to the touch yet it was capable of absorbing large amounts of stress. Pressure was evened out over the total contact area so it also provided a high degree of comfort; it was found that the material flowed to form an imprint of what ever was pressed against it and after the object was removed it would return gradually to its original shape.<br  /><br />

<p>I have never been able to have a life which was free from anxiety and worry. I worry about almost every aspect of life and living this way has caused me a lot of problems including various bouts of ill health from time to time. I needed to find a way of coping with and reducing the amount of stress in my life and in this article I write about how I have managed to achieve this.</p>
<p> So what do I stress about? Well I suppose it is anything and everything. Women and my relationships with them; my financial position &#8211; having a lack of money and worrying about how I am going to be able to pay the bills etc. I also have anxiety over my career and my personal friendships. For whatever reason I also used to worry about what other people thought of me.</p>
<p> I am the kind of person who is classed as a thinker. I will be the first to admit that I over-think at times; some people would go as far as to call me a stress-head &#8211; others, no doubt, see me as some sort of freak. This thinking is very much in a negative manner and is a cycle which I have found hard to break.</p>
<p> About a year ago I was invited to appear on a national radio show to talk about my occupation which is <a target="_blank" target="_blank" href="http://www.webpromotionuk.co.uk">website promotion</a> and offering <a target="_blank" target="_blank" href="http://blog.stammering-stuttering.co.uk">stuttering treatment</a>, and also strangely enough helping an organisation to do with <a target="_blank" target="_blank" href="http://www.childcarebureau.co.uk">becoming a foster carer</a>. I was due to talk live on this radio program at around 2pm. All morning as was my way of course, I was thinking and worrying about how I would come across to other people. I was afraid that I would make a fool of myself and would sound like a bit of an idiot. I also, for whatever reason, started to stress about whether I would be able to remember, under the amount of pressure that I was likely be under, the important aspects of my occupation which people would be interested in.</p>
<p> I was getting myself into a bit of a state and even thought about phoning up to cancel the interview. I then called up a good friend of mine who has always provided me with sound advice. I explained about the radio show and about my fears. He stated that I needed to relax and to even look forward to the experience. It would, he continued, be a chance to promote my own services and therefore was something to be grateful for.</p>
<p> He advised me that what I needed to do was to keep myself busy. If I am very busy, I would not have any time to think in my usual negative way. He stated that he believed that I needed to find things that would occupy my mind. He thought that I was spending the majority of the time stressing about this and that. If however I had a much busier life then I would not have so much time to think in this manner.</p>
<p> This is something I had realised a few years before but had in truth not acted on. I thought about what my friend had said and then decided to get stuck into some much needed gardening. I am happy to let you know that the radio interview went fine.</p>
